After several emotional appeals by her mother Karen for Sharon's safe return, the country looked on in disbelief when Karen confessed to a Police Officer that it was all an elaborate hoax. Part 2 of the show focuses on schoolgirl killer Stuart Hazell who appeared tearful and distraught following the disappearance of 12-year-old Tia Sharp in August 2012.

2. Mitchell Quy & The Philpotts

The disappearance of a young mother. Feeling under pressure, her husband invited a TV crew to clear his name, while experts analysed his statements for tell-tale signs of deception. Part 2 details the horrific story of The Philpotts. On 11 May 2012, the family's home in Allenton, Derby, was seriously damaged by fire at around 4am. Five children who had been asleep upstairs — all died at the scene, while their half-brother died in hospital three days later.

The case of paralympian Oscar Pistorius, who shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp dead in 2013. He claimed it was an accident, but there were suspicions he was falsifying evidence.

The case of John Tanner, who took part in a police reconstruction when his fiancée vanished. Plus, Paul Dyson whose TV plea for his missing lover raised suspicions. 6. Ian Stewart

The murder of best-selling author Helen Bailey by her partner Ian Stewart, who had earlier helped volunteers in her search. The 51-year-old's body was eventually found dumped in a cesspit beneath the garage of her £1.5million home in Royston, Hertfordshire, alongside that of her dog in July 2016. She had been drugged and suffocated.

7. Fadi Nasri & Miles Evans

The cases of Miles Evans and Fadi Nasri. Evans murdered his nine-year-old stepdaughter Zoe in 1997, but before her body was recovered he sat alongside her mother in an appeal for the public's help in finding her. In 2006, Nasri asked for help in finding the person behind a fatal knife attack on his wife Nisha, though in reality had hired two men to perform the killing to claim her life insurance.
