While sitting in his ship repairing one of his space drones, General Caput gives him a call to check in on him. But abruptly falls short after strange pulsing undulations start interfering with his drones, leading to an unexpected catastrophe.

The backstory to how the legendary Pete (the man everyone adores) got his guitar and how it ended up with Connor. Pete is a citizen of Shade who has prophetic visions of a King of Them All that he believes he must seek out. This journey leads him to the deserts of the Dustlands, where he comes across freeway pirates, pterodactyl-masked people and a mall buried under the sands. In the end, he must fight for his life and commits a crime that is such a burden for him to bear that he gives up his guitar.
