
People of the North
A series that visits spectacular places across the northern points of Scandinavia. Hosted by Norwegian television personality Arne Hjeltnes, Swedish chef Frida Ronge, and award-winning distiller Stig Bareksten, the team ventures to far-away places in northern Norway and the Faroe Islands to showcase the Nordic way of life in these remote regions. Throughout the series, the trio explore the food, culture, land, traditions and people who live in this isolated part of the world.
Seasons
1. Finnmark Plateau (Alta)
Air Date: 2023-04-01
Arne, Frida, and Stig travel to Alta in Finnmark, the northernmost county of Norway. The town's indigenous people teach the team how to fish and serve them a classic reindeer stew at a mountain lodge. Later, the hosts join renowned Sami chef, Johnny Trasti and his wife at their hotel and restaurant, situated near the legendary Alta Salmon River.
2. Treasures from the Barents Sea: Kjøllefjord
Air Date: 2023-04-01
The hosts head to Kjøllefjord, the northernmost fishing village on mainland Norway. Chef Frida joins a local fishing crew to catch fresh cod in the Barents Sea, Arne meets with a local storyteller to learn about the village's fishing culture, and Stig dives for enormous king crabs.
3. Faeroe Islands (Faroe Islands) (Færøerne Islands)

Arne, Frida, and Stig travel like Vikings to an old Norse settlement in the Faroe Islands and savor the island's culinary hotspots. The team meets with local artists and singers in Klaksvik followed by a trip to Torshavn, where Frida and Stig prepare a famous regional dish and an ocean-themed beverage.
4. Cod from Lofoten (Holmen Lofoten)

Arne, Frida, and Stig explore Lofoten, an archipelago in the North Atlantic that's famous for its Cod. The team visits the Holmen Culinary Resort, where Frida, Stig, and Chef Valentine Warner create dishes and cocktails that are inspired by the flavors of the sea.
5. The Beautiful West (Ålesund)

Arne, Frida, and Stig experience the outstanding food and hospitality on Norway's west coast. Frida meets up with a local chef in Ålesund who prepares a beautiful fish dish in the middle of town. Meanwhile, Arne and Stig are served a tasting menu, complete with the region's traditional delicacies.
6. Fishing Community of Sørøya (Sørøya)

Arne, Stig and Frida travel to Sørøya to indulge in the various flavors the island has to offer. Arne and Stig venture out at sea to catch halibut, the holiest fish of them all. Meanwhile, Frida samples local ingredients and prepares a delicious meal for the team.
7. Western Fjord Valley (Stranda)

Western Norway is popular amongst tourists for its fjords and majestic mountainous scenery. Storfjord, which translates to "the big fjord" connects most of the small communities visited in this episode. After a trip through the mountains, Arne, Stig and Frida prepare a dish with the famous fjord trout.
8. Salmon Islands (Kvarøy)

Arne, Stig and Frida sample traditional and gourmet meals that highlight coastal ingredients and farmed salmon. Later, the team goes island hopping on the coastline of Helgeland and meets up with the locals living on the outskirts of Scandinavia. Since no commercial flights land on these islands, travelers either arrive by boat or seaplane.
9. The Lofoten Islands (Lofoten)

The team visits the beautiful mountains of Lofoten for a ski trip and a spectacular view of the Arctic islands. To prepare for dinner, Arne and Frida gather their main ingredient, Arctic kelp.
10. The Fjord Valley of Sogn (Sogn)

Arne and Stig take a train ride to Sognefjord, Norway's longest and deepest fjord for ziplining, bike riding, and treats in the village of Flåm. After a trip to a nearby Viking village, the hosts join Chef Sigrid for a glacier hike and a lunch cooked over an open fire.

In the premiere episode, our hosts take us to Hardanger in Western Norway, the land of apples and cider. They go hiking to Norway’s most spectacular rock formation, the famous Troll Tongue, known as Trolltunga in Norwegian. This breathtaking rock formation stands as Norway's most awe-inspiring natural wonder. Along the trip they enjoy the hospitality this part of the country can offer.
2. Arctic Treats (Etne/Vindafjord)

A trip to Tromsø offers unique experiences, boasting the world's northernmost brewery. In Norway’s northernmost city, you can explore an Arctic marine life aquarium or brave floating in near-freezing waters. Visitors flock to witness the midnight sun in summer or the northern lights in winter.
3. Kingdom of Entrepreneurs
Air Date:
In this episode, Arne leads the team to Etne and Vindafjord in Western Norway. Stig crafts a dry martini in an art studio, while Arne embarks on a hike to a cliff formation. Meanwhile, Frida prepares for her cooking, and both Arne and Frida surprise in Viking attire. Frida prepares a traditional Norwegian dish infused with distinctly Asian-Japanese flavors.
4. A Mystery Adventure

The historic Telemark Canal takes Arne, Frida, and Stig deep into the interior of Norway, offering a journey back in time. In today’s episode, they explore the region's hospitality and delve into stories of heavy water and the Second World War. To cap it off, they trek through a mountain to reach the summit of Telemark. Frida prepares some intriguing treats, while Stig crafts a dry martini to celebrate this unique region of Norway.
5. Silver of the Sea

Herring, often called the "silver of the sea," holds a revered place in Scandinavian cuisine for its simplicity and flavor. In this episode, Arne invites Stig and chef Live to Fosen, located just north of Trondheim in Mid-Norway. They encounter two families whose livelihoods revolve around herring fisheries. Join Arne and Stig as they venture out to sea to explore the rich history and traditional methods of harvesting this prized fish.
6. Noble Adventures

In today’s episode, Arne, Sigrid, and Stig journey to the spectacular county of Sogn in Western Norway. It's a true fjord and mountain adventure, highlighting the best experiences one can have on a trip to the historic village of Balestrand, renowned for its natural beauty, local produce and historic charm.
7. A Day of Celebration

In this episode, Arne and Stig are on their way to celebrate the 17th of May amidst the stunning natural beauty of Finse. During winter and late spring, the only means of transportation to these snow-covered peaks is either on skis or via the Bergen Railroad.
8. Trails To Spring

In today’s episode, the adventurous chef Sigrid joins Arne and Stig in Finse. Follow the team as they traverse from the snowy peaks of the Hardanger plateau down to Ulvik on mountain skis, navigating through a winter wonderland. Experience the transition from the majestic mountains to the blooming fjord valley of Hardanger in Spring.

Join the team as they venture through Hardanger, renowned as the apple and cider county of Western Norway. Their journey leads them to the historic manor house of Rosendal, beforeSigrid delves into the intricacies of fjord aquafarming. And when it comes to culinary delights, our trio – Sigrid , Arne, and Stig – indulge in the region’s specialties at the charming restaurant Buer, nestled at the end of the road on the opposite side of the mountains.
10. Richness From the Sea
Air Date:
The rich bounty of fish in Northern Norway is renowned, and in this episode, Arne, Frida, and Stig venture to Vesterålen in Nordland County to explore modern aquaculture. Near the village of Sortland, they uncover a gastronomic gem at Kvitnes Farm, promising a culinary odyssey. Today's culinary focus is on salmon, a perfect fit for Frida, who crafts Japanese-inspired maki sushi rolls.
11. A Frozen Adventure

In this final episode, Arne and Stig embark on a journey to Harbin and Mulan in northeastern China, famed for the spectacular Harbin Ice Festival and the lively festivities of Chinese New Year. Amidst their adventures, they savor the diverse flavors of authentic Chinese cuisine at local restaurants, adding a delicious dimension to their exploration.
