Between the Lions
Between the Lions is a PBS Kids puppet television series designed to promote reading. The show is a co-production between WGBH in Boston and Sirius Thinking, Ltd., in New York City, in association with Mississippi Public Broadcasting, in Mississippi. The show has won seven Daytime Emmy awards between 2001 and 2007. The target audience is children 4 to 7 years old. It has the same puppet style as Sesame Street and several season 2 episodes, notably in Dance in Smarty Pants, had a few characters from Sesame Street guest appearing. Between The Lions started its 10th and final season on September 20, 2010. The Show Ended in November, 22 2010 Along with Reading Rainbow
Seasons
1. Pecos Bill Cleans Up the West
Air Date: 2000-04-03
Theo reads the cubs a book about the wild adventures of Pecos Bill, specifically about the time ol' Bill wrangled a tornado. When the tornado escapes from the book, however, and wreaks havoc inside the library, the lions realize there's only one person who can tame that tornado: Pecos Bill, himself!
2. The Lost Rock
Air Date: 2000-04-04
A lost rock mysteriously appears in the library, and he can't remember who he is or where he comes from. The lions then decide to set out and search for clues as to what book the rock belongs in.
3. Little Big Mouse
Air Date: 2000-04-05
When a mouse from a children's book becomes a hero, everyone in the library floods her with fan mail - which leaves Click the Computer mouse feeling unwanted.
4. Farmer Ken's Puzzle
Air Date: 2000-04-06
Lionel plays a computer game called ""Farmer Ken's Puzzle"", in which he must figure out how to get a hen, cat, and bag of seed, across a river one at a time. When Leona wants to play, Lionel refuses to let her, claiming: ""The box says ages 7 and up! Not 4 and down.""
5. Shooting Stars
Air Date: 2000-04-07
The lions try to stay awake at night, in order to see a meteor shower. Of course, this is not as easy as it sounds, as Theo says, ""Lions need a solid 22 hours of sleep a day!""
6. The Hopping Hen
Air Date: 2000-04-09
A Hopping Hen causes a mighty ruckus in the library, so the lions decide to put up ""No Hopping Hen Here"" signs, in order to stop the problem. But the problem is only beginning, because whoever printed the signs left off the word ""No""!
7. Touching the Moon
Air Date: 2000-04-11
Cleo reads the cubs a bedtime story about a Queen who wants to be able to touch the moon, but can't. However, Leona is then unable to get to sleep without wanting to learn more about how the Queen can reach the moon.
8. The Boy Who Cried Wolf
Air Date: 2000-04-12
Click the Mouse brings the Boy from the story ""The Boy Who Cried Wolf"" out of the storybook, so he can learn more about how to properly care for his sheep.
9. Fuzzy Wuzzy, Wuzzy?
Air Date: 2000-04-13
The famous Fuzzy Wuzzy Bear from the classic children's rhyme visits the library, where everyone is immediately caught up in ""Fuzzy Wuzzy Mania!"" Everyone except Lionel, because if he hears that danged rhyme once more, he's gonna scream!
10. Lionel's Antlers
Air Date: 2000-04-14
Lionel wakes up one morning, much like he does every day, to find that overnight, he's grown a pair of antlers on his head! To help him feel better, Cleo reads him the book ""Imogene's Antlers"" - also about a kid who woke up one morning to find she had grown antlers. When Lionel is still feeling low, his parents try to come up with helpful ""uses"" for his antlers.
11. To the Ship! To the Ship!

The lions learn about a real-life pirate named Ann Bonnie, after Lionel refuses to let Leona play pirates with him (claiming that there was no such thing as girl pirates).
12. The Chap With Caps
Air Date: 2000-04-18
Writer Babs Caplan visits the library, hoping to smooth out the bumps in her new book, called ""The Chap With Caps"". It's going to need more than just a little smoothing out - because it has no middle or end!
13. Pandora's Box
Air Date: 2000-04-19
After reading the story ""Pandora's Box"", Lionel and Leona come across a similar-looking box, themselves, and wonder if they should open it or not. Apparently ignoring the moral of the story, they open it, and unleash a terrible thing to all the library patrons: Hiccups!
14. Lionel's Great Escape Trick

Lionel gets a few pointers on the technique of doing magic tricks, from the master magician Harry Houdini, himself. When he locks himself in the closet for his act, though, Leona fears that he's stuck in there, so she asks Click to come up with some magic words in order to get her brother out of the closet.
15. There's a Fly in My Soup

The Lions try to make Click laugh by reading jokes out of Theo's ""The Universal Encyclopedia of Fly Jokes"" book, only to find out from Click that computer pointing devices are not programmed for laughter. Can anything make her laugh?
16. The Popcorn Popper
Air Date: 2000-04-23
Lionel and Leona read a book about a popcorn popper, and get the idea to take the popper out of the book and into the library, so they can pop all the popcorn they want.
17. Something Fishy
Air Date: 2000-04-25
Lionel and Leona learn about Eagles and Fish after reading Cliffhanger's latest adventure.
18. Hug, Hug, Hug!
Air Date: 2000-04-26
A sculpter named Pygmalion carves a statue of a woman, falls in love with her, and gives her a hug - only she can't hug him back. The Lions then try to help find ways for the statue to hug Pygmalion.
19. The Ram in the Pepper Patch
Air Date: 2000-04-27
The naughty ram from the book ""The Ram in the Pepper Patch"" escapes into the library, where he proceeds to make a mess out of everything!
20. A Peck of Peppers
Air Date: 2000-04-28
Babs Caplan comes to the library to create a fantastic tongue twister, with some help from the Lions. Then, Babs and Leona go head-to-head with the master of all Tongue Twisters, Lionel.
21. Sausage Nose
Air Date: 2000-05-01
The Lions watch a video of a foreign film called ""Sausage Nose"", in which a poor couple receives three wishes from a wise old woman. Somehow, a sausage gets wished onto the wife's nose, and from there, the characters from the film come to the library looking for advice on what to spend their last wish on.
22. Red Hat, Green Hat
Air Date: 2000-05-02
Leona makes her very own hat, with one red side and one green side. When she walks through the library with it on, one group of people see the green side, and the other group sees the red side, causing a great big argument among everyone!
23. The Lucky Duck
Air Date: 2000-05-03
A cute little duck from a cute little children's book becomes sick and tired of being cute all the time! With Lionel's help, the duck tries to become a rock-n-rollin' leather-clad rebel, but no matter how hard he tries, everyone still finds him so gosh darn cute.
24. The Old Man

Babs Caplan returns to the library to work on her new book called ""The Old Man"". Unfortunately, it has no middle or end to it! But with the Lions' help, Babs just might be able to rescue her masterpiece after all.
25. A King and His Hawk
Air Date: 2000-05-05
Lionel and Leona read a very sad story about a King and his friend, the Hawk. After, Leona wants to take and hide the book where no will be able to find it, so they can't read it and be sad like she was. Also, Theo sings about the greatness of reading sad, sad books.
26. The Roar That Makes Them Run

Lionel and Leona try to convince Theo to show them his Lion-powered ""Mighty Roar that Makes them Run"", but Theo is reluctant to do so -- after all, they're in a library!
27. Piggyback, Piggyback
Air Date: 2000-05-09
After reading a book about a king who rode on his friend's back (because he didn't want to get his feet dirty), Leona wants to do the same. So she hops on her dad's back, and doesn't want to let go!
28. The Fox and the Crow
Air Date: 2000-05-10
When ""The Fox and the Crow"" fable is read in the library, Walter and Clay get angry over the way the crow was depicted as a ""bird brain"", and then protest to have the story banned! The Lions come up with a less extreme approach, and suggest that they re-write the story to make the crow the one who comes out on top.
29. Giants and Cubs
Air Date: 2000-05-11
Lionel gets upset over the outcome of a baseball game, where the Giants clobbered the Cubs. Theo and Cleo decide it would be a good idea to bring the Giants into the library, for Lionel to meet them. But when Leona hears about the idea, she thinks they mean the big ""Fee Fi Fo Fum"" Giants!
30. Be Bop

The jazzy, rhythmic sounds of Be Bop make their way into the library one day, and soon everyone is singing nonsensical Be Bop tunes -- everyone except Barnaby B. Busterfield III, who claims he just doesn't get this Be Bop thing!

Bruno Kirby plays a Dad whose house is overrun by kids: ""There's hardly enough room to put on pants!"" he complains. Fed up with all this overcrowding, he decides to seek the advice of an old wise woman in town - who only adds to the problem!

Lionel's friend, Gus, gets annoyed when Leona asks him to be her designated reader for the day -- because he can't read.
3. The Good Seed

Click the Mouse gets a computer virus that turns everything in the library into a total disaster area!
4. Icarus's Wings

The story of Icarus, the boy who made wax wings and flew too close to the sun, inspires Barnaby B. Busterfield to follow his dream of...flying! With help from Walter and Clay, of course.
5. Zoop! Zoop!

The story of Abiyoyo terrifies Leona, and it takes some cleverness on the part of her mother to help Leona beat her fear.
6. Clickety-Clack, Clickety-Clack!

Theo ""borrows"" the typewriter from the book ""Click-Clack Moo!"", and has a hard time letting it go when the cows want it back.
7. Poetry Day
Air Date: 2001-04-10
It's Alice day in the library, which means everything has something to do with ""Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"", and the backward logic of the looking glass. Calloo Callay!
8. Bobby the Hopping Robot
Air Date: 2001-04-11
Lionel's new toy, a hopping robot named Bobby, is a real tough job to put together. Lionel, Theo, Cleo, and just about everybody has a try at assembling the robot correctly -- but it still doesn't work! Who could've guessed Leona would come up with the solution!
9. Teacher's Pet

Cleo catches the ""I-Can't-Hear-or-Smell-or-Tell-if-Someone's-Sneaking-Up-On-Me"" Flu, right before she's scheduled to go and visit her old teacher.
10. The Last Cliff Hanger

Lionel is devastated (Shocked! Taken Aback! Apalled!) when he discovers that there will no longer be any new ""Cliffhanger"" books - since the author, Livingston Dangerously, has decided to call it quits. But being the devout ""Cliffhanger"" fan he is, Lionel decides to do something about this dire situation!
11. Pebble Trouble

Featuring the book ""Sylvester and the Magic Pebble"", in which a young donkey boy discovers a magic pebble in the woods, and somehow wishes himself to be a rock. His parents spend many months out looking for him, and eventually find him as the rock, and unknowingly transform him back into his old self!
12. Oh, Yes, It Can!
Air Date: 2001-04-17
A storyteller visits the library one day, and tells an old story about a Yammering Yam and how it led to a whole series of unbelievable (but true) events for a farmer, a fisherman, and king.
13. Five, Six, and Thistle Sticks
Air Date: 2001-04-18
Lionel's friend, Lenny - a fellow ""Cliffhanger"" aficianado - comes for a visit, after having since moved away. When he arrives at the library, however, Lionel finds out that Lenny doesn't like ""Cliffhanger"" anymore. That instead, he has taken a liking to a similar book hero, ""Justin Time""! Can Lionel and Lenny still be friends, even if they don't like the same things?
14. Bug Beard
Air Date: 2001-04-19
In the story ""Bug Beard"", a woodcutter brings home a grubby, buggy old man he finds in the woods. His wife is not amused by the buggy old man, and so she sets about trying to clean him up. When the buggy man is finally all cleaned up, it turns out he just isn't his happy, dancing, singing old self. Can the Lions help?
15. Trains and Brains and Rainy Plains
Air Date: 2001-04-20
Lionel gets a brainstorm after he hears Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain. What if he and Leona ride a train through the plain of the book?
16. Quest, Quest, Quest!
Air Date: 2001-04-23
Babs Caplan is back with a new story, The Quest for the Chest. And once again, she doesn't get it right. Originally, there is no action in the story. GUIDING PRINCIPLE: Short E sound.
17. The Spider and the Lie
Air Date: 2001-04-24
Lionel writes a Crime Story, which involves Leona, a slippery character named Monkey C. Monkeydew, a missing library card, and a spider.
18. Why the Baboon's Balloon Went Ka-Boom!
Air Date: 2001-04-25
Theo wants to teach the cubs a lesson, which he finds in a book of concatenations called Because a Little Bug Went KA-CHOO! What Theo doesn't know is that, by pulling that book from the middle of a pile, a pen dropped to the floor, setting off a concatenation in the library. It culminates with a hot-air balloon's bursting.
19. But, Mama, But ...
Air Date: 2001-04-26
Cleo is about to fly off to visit some newborn cubs. Leona feels she is able to spend a couple of days without her, but can she be sure> And what about everyone else? To ease everyone's feelings, Cleo (with eight minutes to go in the program) reads I Miss You, Stinky Face by Lisa McCourt; illustrated by Cyd Moore.
20. Dreaming Shakespeare

It's Shakespeare Day at the Library. Fanfares, flowery language and period costumes are the order of the day (Cleo is dressed as the female star of Antony and Cleopatra). A method actor is unable to play Romeo and Juliet because Juliet is sick. Maybe an exasperated hen can fill in.
21. Rats

After someone calls Leona a nasty name on the playground, a friend of the Lions', named Frank, tells a story about Rats, which shows that bad names can hurt just as much as sticks and stones.
22. Tweet! Tweet!

An intriguing theory from the book Bone Poems has got the cubs and pigeons thinking: Are birds the descendants of dinosaurs? Walter and Clay Pigeon take that prospect to an extreme. GUIDING PRINCIPLE: Double-e sound.

A famous marionette team is preparing to tell the story of Orlando Furioso and his battle to rescue Angelica from the curse of Fallerina. It's a story Leona knows by heart, and she has more than a loving desire to see this play.
